Our School

Ysgol Penllwyn school is a small rural school. A caring and friendly nature embraces you when you step over the threshold, where you will be welcomed by pupils with a smile and a ‘bore da’.

Pupil numbers

40 pupils are served by a team of happy and dedicated staff who work across 2 classes. Smaller numbers mean that staff get to know learners particularly well, successfully meeting and supporting their wellbeing and educational needs. There are further benefits to being less pupils:

  • regular opportunities throughout their time at school to take responsibilities e.g. on school councils
  • Swimming lessons for all pupils aged 4 to 11.
  • Mixed classes in terms of age meaning that pupils learn from experiences and socialize with older pupils.
  • Regular opportunities to represent the school in competitions such as the Urdd.

Pupils benefit from our partnership with Ysgol Penrhyn-coch. We form joint sports teams to ensure pupils get to experience a wide range of sports while they are pupils at the school. As well as this, our partnership provides friends and familiar faces as pupils as they transfer to secondary school.

School Site

Our extensive site includes the school building itself, the Cylch Meithrin Penllwyn cabin, a generous outdoor learning area for younger pupils, a playground at the front of the school, a park, a polytunnel, and a football field fondly known by pupils as 'top pitch' '. On a fine Summer day there are magnificent views of the area from here - and on these days, there is nothing our pupils enjoy more than rolling down the bank from the top pitch! Our curriculum is enriched by our outdoor area, which offers gardening, studies of the natural world, survival skills and plenty of space to explore a variety of sports.

There has been a considerable amount of investment in the school building over the past few years including new windows, a heating system, classroom renovation and the creation of an outside area for each class. These have transformed the school, providing a modern and attractive learning environment that pupils and staff can be proud of.
